The democratic process. Taiwan only became a truly democratic republic in 1987, so the nation is still figuring it out. The recent "Great Recall" or 大罷免 of summer this year shows how both major parties (DPP/KMT) are still working out democratic norms. The DPP tried a snap recall election of 31 KMT legislators - every recall vote failed, showing that Taiwan voters prioritized the democratic process over partisan politics. Crises and wars aside, Taiwan's future will be navigated by a series of compromises between the DPP & KMT, which will be the only sustainable path forward. The CCP is worried about the growing durability of the democratic consensus on Taiwan, so expect interference.
I have lived in Kaohsiung for over 10 years and I have only met a few "pugilists", but with an average age of over 40, generally retired people who spend their time in public parks, and "ostriches", the vast majority of whom are young people who are much more concerned with their daily problems.
Referring to last paragraph- How do these groups achieve synthesis?

Kaohsiung is a very chill city. And yes, agree that many people ignore cross-strait issues. Interesting times.
